Gajah Muda (Achmad Wiranto, 1993)
Gajah Muda is a 1993 Indonesian action war film. It was directed by Achmad Wiranto, and stars Bing Slamet, Fazura, Imelda Staunton, Syafiq Ahmad, Ade Marianto, Mardani K. (in her first movie role), Mandeldi. Despite its all-star cast, the film was relatively low-budget, only being filmed at a studio in Jakarta. This was meant to make it easier to reuse the film's sets and locations.
The film begins with the terrible war between the two brothers from the Gajah Mada kingdom. Their lands are invaded by a neighboring kingdom, the Sultanate of Selema, and when the Sultan's army invades, a group of soldiers led by Haji Syifudin (again played by Fazura) shoot and mortally wound both the Sultan and his brother. Outraged at this, the Gajah Mada kingdom takes revenge by invading the Sultanate of Selema and sacking their capital. A quick escape by the Sultan and his brother causes them to try to rejoin with their allies, the Sultanate of Buton.
However, on their way to meet the Sultan of Buton, they are surrounded and killed by the Gajah Mada soldiers. Their bodies and war loot are then taken into the Gajah Mada kingdom for a victory parade. The film then follows a family of sailors on a ship. The wife is sick and soon afterwards dies, leaving her husband with a baby girl. With the help of the crew and a mystically-powerful boat, they sail to another kingdom, the Kingdom of Katung.
